Autumn draws our attention to thoughts around harvest. All those little seeds planted in the spring have brought forth the fullness of their potential. I am reminded of the saying, “It is not about the number of seeds in the apple, but the number of apples in the seed.” Nature brings us many spiritual lessons about our potential and the need to live in consciousness of the greater visions of our place in the universe. And
of each other!
Last Sunday we heard two stories: First, we spoke of the story of Jonah, called by God to prophesize to the Ninevites of their imminent destruction unless they repented of their evil ways. Jonah’s personal hatred of Ninevites left him incapable of rejoicing when the city repented and returned to God. Instead, he planted himself outside the city to sulk, wishing himself dead. God’s reaction was meant to lift him to a broader, more compassionate consciousness, void
of judgment.
The second story was a parable that Jesus told of a landowner who, throughout the day, hired people to work in his vineyard. Some of the workers toiled all day; others were hired for an hour or two. Yet all laborers were paid the same amount at the end of the day. Of course, this can make all of us who work for a living uncomfortable. Many parables begin with these words: “The kingdom of heaven is like” Like the story of Jonah, this parable is meant to lift our thoughts to a wider, more loving place, with no judgment, just love. Loving someone can be like cutting open an apple to see what’s inside. We can either say simply, “The apple has five seeds” or we can wonder how many apples are in each seed. This is the higher way, the seeing of the heart and its potential. It is what the Kingdom of Heaven is like.
